Arizona Republic: ‘McCain passing on public cash?’

On Sunday, January 28, the Arizona Republic, Senator McCain’s home-state newspaper, included the following headline:  ‘McCain passing on public cash?’

The full article can be found here.

The story references the fact that Senator McCain last year, “as he began eyeing a run for the White House in 2008,” removed his name as a sponsor of legislation he’d co-sponsored since 2003 to strengthen the presidential public financing system.

According to the article…

“A source involved in McCain’s exploratory campaign said Thursday that the senator decided not to co-sponsor that bill because it might appear to be a conflict of interest. …

“McCain exploratory campaign spokesman Danny Diaz would not say whether the senator will opt out of the public-financing system.

“A source involved in the exploratory campaign said that while the senator is now raising private donations for the Republican primary and is reserving the right to raise money for the general election, that does not mean he has made a decision on public financing.”

Conflict of interest?  Didn’t he advocate for the passage of McCain-Feingold, which muzzles the voice of the American people at times when it’s most important for them to speak – during elections – before, during and after his 2000 GOP Presidential primary bid?

How convenient that McCain grows a conscience when it is clear that such legislation would only benefit his 2008 competition.
